Sistan and Balochistan once formed the border of Achaemenid Persia and Mauryan India and now mark the border between Iran and Pakistan. In a landscape of mud volcanoes and vast deserts, the Baloch people live a tough life in a deeply conservative society and harsh environment, with little connection to the outside world.

The Great Rann of Kutch is home to itinerant pastoral communities, who though are collectively called maldhari. One such maldhari community are the Fakirani Jats, who live a semi-nomadic life and breed camels. The camels are known as Kharai, a breed which is peculiar to the mangrove ecosystem of Kutch district.
