Hindustan Motors factory was set up in 1948, and it started production of the Hindustan Ambassador car in the late 50s. It soon became the vehicle of choice for bureaucrats and politicians for travel. In 1962, the Calcutta Taxi Association took initiative to convert the Hindustan Ambassador to the iconic Yellow Taxi.
