Jaisalmer Fort was established by Maharawal Jaisal in 1156 CE, after whom the fort is named. He shifted the capital from Lodhruva because Jaisalmer offered better protection against invasions.The fort’s yellow sandstone walls camouflage it in the desert. For this reason, it is also known as Sonar Kella (Golden Fort). In 2013, Jaisalmer Fort, along with five other forts of Rajasthan, was declared UNESCO World Heritage Site under ‘Hill Forts of Rajasthan’.

Jaisalmer Fort was built by Bhati Rajputs, but lost prominence after partition of India. The fort was brought to cinema by director Satyajit Ray in his Bengali film Sonar Kella, bringing generations of Bengali tourists to visit Jaisalmer. It is a 'living' fort in Rajasthan which is still inhabited.
