Poorakali dances are performed in temples in northern Kerala as part of the spring festival of Pooram. The dances have several segments, and are performed only by men. The movements are vigorous and martial, with complicated choreographic patterns and varying tempos. This video shows young boys and men rehearsing for the final performance inside the temple compound. The rehearsals take place in a pandal called purapandal, erected outside the temple precincts.
