Poorakkali festival is celebrated in parts of northern Kerala in March and April. It is a spring festival that celebrates the spirit of love. During the festival, devotees sponsor meals in temples as an offering to the deity. The community gathers in the temple to prepare and distribute the meal. The food is very austere, consisting only of rice gruel and a few dishes. Conversations and laughter fill the air; while the performers of the Poorakkali dances, which will take place later in the evening and over the next days, rehearse in the background. The whole exercise augments the festive mood and strengthens the community bond.
