महात्मा गांधी के छत्तीसगढ़ आगमन एवं यहाँ उनके द्वारा की गयी गतिविधियां जनसामान्य को अपेक्षाकृत अल्पज्ञात हैं। प्रस्तुत आलेखों से इस बारे में उपलब्ध सूचनारं प्रस्तुत की जा रही हैं।
महात्मा गाँधी का दो बार छत्तीसगढ़ आगमन हुआ पहली बार दिसंबर सन १९२० में तथा दूसरी बार नवम्बर सन १९३३ में। पहला प्रवास जल सत्याग्रह के सम्बन्ध में हुआ और दूसरी बार उनका प्रवास तिलक कोष एवं स्वराज कोष हेतु था।
(दिसंबर १९२० में महात्मा गाँधी का प्रथम छत्तीसगढ़ प्रवास यद्यपि गाँधी वाङ्मय में उल्लेखित नहीं है ,किन्तु विभिन्न स्थानीय स्रोतों से पर्याप्त जानकारी मिलती है कि महात्मा गाँधी कंडेल नहर सत्याग्रह के तारतम्य में रायपुर आए और धमतरी , कुरुद तक गए थे।)
गजेटियर ऑफ़ इंडिया , मध्य प्रदेश , जिला रायपुर , १९७३ के अनुसार -
‘Following the Amritsar Congress of 1919, at which the Khilfat Movement was endorsed and Non-Co-0pration was adopted as a political weapon, the District Conference was held at Raipur in the year1920. A public meeting was held on 17 March, 1920 and a Khilafat sub-committee was formed. When Asgar Ali thanked the Hindu brethren for their sympathy for the Muslim cause, Ravi Shankar Shukla retorted, “We are no more Hindu and Muslims, but Hindustanis in the strictest sense.” Such was the spirit of those times.
Those were the days of brisk and militant political activities. Just before the Nagpur session of the Congress, Mahatma Gandhi visited Raipur, with Ali brothers, on 20 December,1920in connection with Tilak Fund and Swarajya Fund. Gandhiji visited Dhamtari and Kurud also, where people expresse their regards by a good deal of contribution to the Fund. It was in such an atmosphere that the Raipur District Committee was formed.’
