Akhyai Jyoti Mahanta hails from the Jorhat district of Assam, and is a postgraduate student of Sociology at Tezpur Central University. His research interest lies in the sociocultural issues of Assam.

Hem Chandra Goswami is a renowned mask maker from Assam’s Majuli district. He has dedicated four decades of his life to practising, preserving and promoting the mask-making tradition of Assam.

In this interview, he elaborates on the history and glory of Assam’s mask culture, its use and evolution, the significance of masks at Majuli’s Raas festival, and people’s attitude towards masks and mask making.
