Kalakshetra Foundation

Kalakshetra Foundation is a cultural institution, which was founded in January 1936 by Rukmini Devi Arundale and her husband George Arundale. Under Rukmini Devi's guidance, the institution achieved international recognition for its unique approach to performing arts' training, especially in terms of style and presentation. In 1962, Kalakshetra moved to its present campus in Besant Nagar, Chennai. In 1993, it was recognised by the Government of India as an Institute of National Importance and is now an autonomous body under the Ministry of Culture. This module explores the history, teaching style and national significance of this illustrious institution through interviews with its alumni.
